owner operator market: the Volvo VT 830 and the Volvo VN 730 mid-roof

great visibility and safety, a comfortable driver environment, a very
quiet cab, and a smooth, precise ride,” said Peter Karlsten, president
and CEO of Volvo Trucks North America.
The height at the rear of the sleeper for both trucks is 86 inches,
a full two feet less than the Volvo VT 880 and Volvo VN 780. The other

Volvo makes Bendix ABS-6 standard on trucks
GREENSBORO, N.C.
– Volvo Trucks North America will offer the ABS-6 antilock brake system
made by Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems on the Volvo VN and Volvo
VHD.
Beginning in early
2005, Volvo will offer Bendix ABS-6 Advanced with ESP (Electronic Stability
Program), featuring protection from rollover and jackknifes.
Bendix ABS-6 will
be Volvo’s standard antilock brake system in North America, while ABS-6
Advanced with ESP will be a customer-specified option.
ESP is able to
selectively apply the brakes on individual wheel ends, depending on
driving conditions, vehicle speed and other inputs from onboard sensors.
This assists the driver to reduce speed, keep the vehicle in proper
alignment, and reduce the tendency for the truck and trailer to slide
or jackknife, the company says.
The Roll Stability
Program (RSP) -- an element of ESP -- monitors inputs from sensors and
applies all available brakes on a vehicle to rapidly reduce rollover
potential while turning, a consideration for fleets operating high center-of-gravity
trucks.
Volvo will offer
Bendix ABS-6 in three different configurations: with four wheel speed
sensors and four brake modulators (known as 4S 4M); with six sensors
and four modulators (6S 4M); and with six sensors and six modulators
(6S 6M).

Volvo makes
Bendix ABS-6 standard on VN, VHD
03/25/2004
–
GREENSBORO, N.C. Volvo Trucks North America Inc. will offer the ABS-6
antilock brake system made by Bendix Commercial Vehicle
Systems
LLC on the Volvo VN and Volvo VHD.
Beginning
in early 2005, Bendix's ABS-6 will be Volvo's standard antilock brake
system in North America, while ABS-6 Advanced with ESP will be a customer-specified
option. Antilock brake systems are required by law on trucks sold in
North America.
ESP
is able to selectively apply the brakes on individual wheel-ends, depending
on driving conditions, vehicle speed and other inputs from onboard sensors.
This assists the driver to reduce speed, keep the vehicle in proper
alignment, and reduce the tendency for the truck and trailer to slide
or jackknife. This stability function is known as yaw control. In addition
to jackknifes, yaw control is a safety advantage in situations involving
oversteer or understeer, and sudden transitions from dry to slippery
surfaces.
The
Roll Stability Program (RSP) -- an element of ESP -- monitors inputs
from sensors and applies all available brakes on a vehicle to rapidly
reduce rollover potential while turning, a consideration for fleets
operating high center-of-gravity trucks. Rollover is an especially dangerous
accident for truck drivers, contributing to 58 per cent of truck driver
accident fatalities in the U.S. , according to a study by the University
of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

AUTOCAR Trucks
Makes a gutsy move
12/08/2003 — AUTOCAR
Trucks announced recently that they have re-designed their Xpeditor cab to give
4 ½ inches more leg and knee room. This allows the driver to sit further back
from the steering wheel providing more “belly room” and further enhanced
ergonomics.

New

Open
House a Success!
10/10/2002 — Our
open house, held on October 10th, was a smashing success! Volvo sent us the new,
ultra modern VN670 to show off (see below). Barbequed burgers and hot dogs were
served for lunch and a few fortunate souls got to take the rig for a test drive.
This writer wasn't among the privileged but I was told
by those that went that the ride and seat comfort was out of this world. To my
surprise the unit came equipped with an Autoshift 10 speed which makes driving
that much more pleasurable.

Announcement
Volvo
has met New EPA Environmental Requirements
10/1/2002 — Volvo
has been give permission by the U.S. Environmental protection agency to
manufacture and sell trucks with the new EPA02-Compliant VED12 Diesel Engine. In
a Memo from Susan Alt, Vice President in charge of Marketing, the
following was stated:
"In a letter received by Volvo this week, the EPA said,
'We believe this engine meets all applicable emissions requirements of the Clean Air Act, EPA’s regulations, and the terms of your consent
decree.' The agency issued Volvo a conditional certificate, with final certification expected once EPA completes its formal review process."
Why
has Volvo been so quick to implement the new regulations? We'll let Ms. Alt tell
you in her own words:
"Quality, safety and concern for the environment are the principles that have guided Volvo for 75 years as an industry leader in transportation solutions. Because Volvo is the world’s largest manufacturer of heavy-duty diesel engines, our commitment to minimize the environmental impacts of diesel engines has a positive global effect. Volvo is committed to continuing its industry leadership in the
development of environmentally friendly innovations."

The AUTOCAR HISTORY: 100
Years of Quality Vehicles
Autocar LLC
might be the newest heavy-duty truck company, but the firm is built on a
storied tradition.
As part of the July 2001 transaction that brought the Xpeditor truck line
from Volvo Trucks North America Inc. to Grand Vehicle Works Holdings LLC (GVW),
GVW also gained the rights to an esteemed and historic name: Autocar, the
oldest vehicle nameplate in continuous production in the United States.
Highland Park, Ill.-based GVW put the acquired name to work by christening
its newest subsidiary Autocar LLC. Autocar will market and manufacture the
Xpeditor, a high-quality truck used mainly for refuse hauling.
"The Autocar name provides instant name recognition. It's associated with
historic achievements in the truck industry," said Bob Enright, president of
Union City, Ind.-based Autocar LLC. "By establishing Autocar LLC, we have
gained the opportunity to build new relationships and vehicles while
upholding a strong heritage of quality, innovation and performance."
The original Autocar company got its start more than 100 years ago as the
Pittsburgh Motor Car Company. Founded in 1897 by brothers Louis and John
Clark, the company's first vehicle was a gas-powered tricycle. Two years
later, the Clarks moved the company to Ardmore, Pa.,
and renamed the firm Autocar. In 1905, the name Autocar became a registered
trademark.
The company began focusing on trucks in 1907, with the introduction of a
two-ton truck with shaft driven axle. Autocar was the first truck
manufacturer to build wheels with wooden instead of wire spokes. It
introduced its first commercial vehicle in 1908, and growth continued
throughout ensuing decades.
Autocar has many truck manufacturing achievements to its credit:
-
It was
the first company to mass-produce a truck with forward control (a
configuration in which more than half the engine length is behind the
furthest-front point of the windshield base and the steering wheel hub is
in the first quarter of the vehicle length)
-
It
offered the first four-cylinder-engine forward-control truck
-
It was
one of the few truck manufacturers to make its own engines, transmissions
and rear axles.
In
addition, auto historians cite Autocar trucks as being instrumental to the
Allied forces' efforts in World Wars I and II.
In 1953, the White Motor Car Co. purchased a controlling interest in Autocar
and moved the company to Exton,
Pa. White primarily marketed Autocar trucks to companies in the
construction, logging, mining, quarrying and oil industries.
In 1981 Volvo purchased White, renaming the company Volvo White Truck Corp.,
and retained the Autocar name. After July 1995, Volvo continued to use the
Autocar emblem on heavy construction trucks, and in 1997, Autocar celebrated
its 100th anniversary.
With GVW's acquisition, Autocar is proudly positioned for another century of
integrity and successful contributions to the trucking industry.
